Bill McCallion has been a paediatric surgeon for over three decades, a job that requires a passion to succeed, the compassion to deal with the most vulnerable in our society and the resilience to bounce back in the face of adversity. Bill has developed fascinating insights into the traits that identify successful leaders, particularly where the stakes are high and when the outcome, on many occasions, is the difference between life and death. Key to his role as a surgeon, Bill will explore the “art” of decision-making including the crucial relationship between benefit and risk.
In his role as university academic and mentor Bill developed a formula aimed at guiding trainees towards success as they entered the physically and emotionally challenging work as newly qualified doctors. His formula, the “5 A’s of success” is as relevant in the boardroom of large corporations or for entrepreneurs in a new start-up as it is in the operating theatre. He explores the values of strong work ethic and emotional intelligence and probes the origins of resilience which is essential in any industry.
